In this post, I would like to share how to insert beautiful latex equationsinto Microsoft Office Word and PowerPoint.
I assume that one of the LaTeX distributions has been installed on your system.On Windows, either TeX Live or MiKTeX is fine.
Free software
There is a free plugin calledtexsword which can generate goodquality LaTeX equations in Word.
How to install
Download the package from sourceforge, extract it. You will see something likethis,
For Office 2007 and later versions, copy the file texsword.dotm to thedirectory C:Users<USER_NAME>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWordSTARTUP,<USER_NAME> represents your user name. In case that you can not locatethis directory in this way, here is how you can find it in your computer:
- Click on the File ribbon (Office 2010) or Office button (Office 2007)
- Click Options
- Click Advanced
- Scroll down and find a button File Locations. Click on it.
- Find Startup folder in the list of the Word system folders.
- Remember where it is and close the Word. Copy the file.
If everything went well, upon next Word launch, you will see the TeXswordbuttons in the Add-Ins ribbon.
How to use
To insert equations, click the button with TeX label (see image above). Thereis also a shorcut to insert LaTeX equations: just pressALT+T.
For more usages, please consult the texword_readme.docx file bundled with thetexsword.dotm. It has detailed instructions on how to use it.
Commercial and shareware
There is a well-known software MathType which support LaTeX syntax. The onlyproblem is that the license fee is too high for a student. I have found anothersoftware which is cheaper and can do the same thing. It is calledAxMath and is developed by a Chinese company.
You can use the software free with limited features1 or you can purchase alicense for about $6.12 (￥39) to activate full feature.
After you have installed this software, a ribbon will appear in the Word menu.
You can insert inline, display and numbered equations. To change to the LaTeXinput mode, click the button in the lower right of panel or press shortcut keyCtrl+Tab.
It support LaTeX command auto-completion once you start typing , which isconvenient.
After finishing equations, you can use Shift+Enter torender the equations.

How to use
Type the LaTeX code just as you do in LaTeX,
Click the Generate button to generate LaTeX equations. If you want to updatethe equation, select the generated image, then click the Edit LaTeX displaybutton under the IguanaTeX ribbon. After finishing editting, click the buttonRegenerate to regenerate the equation.
How use Chinese character inside math mode?
By default the math mode in IguanTeX does not support Chinese character even ifyou have wrapped the characters with text{} command.
To use Chinese, you have to do several things:
- Install GhostScript2.
- Install Imagemagick.
- Use
pdflatexinstead of the defaultlatexcommand.
You also need to the set the path of GhostScript and Imagemagick executablefiles correctly in the IguanaTex settings, as shown below

The latest version of IguanaTex (currently v1.58 -- October 10, 2020) should work for all users, on 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, running 32-bit or 64-bit MS Office, on PowerPoint 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, as well as Office 365.

Important note regarding malware detections: Some anti-virus softwares and firewalls report IguanaTex_v1_58.ppam as malware, sometimes even blocking download. After careful review of the code, I believe that these are false positives (more details at the bottom of this page). If you are having difficulties downloading the file above, the password protected .zip file containing the add-in (password: IguanaTex) should be fine. You can also try white-listing the file with your anti-virus software, or try the .pptm source (for the source version, open and 'save as' a .ppam add-in file, then load that add-in).
For users from institutions requiring digital signatures (code-signing):IguanaTex v1.58 with self-signed certificate (.ppam)
If your institution prevents you from using the recommended version of the add-in at the top of the page, please download this version, code-signed using a self-signed digital certificate that I created, and ask your IT department to add that certificate to their list of trusted certificates.

Installation:
- Load the add-in:
in 'File' > 'Options' > 'Add-Ins' > 'Manage:', choose 'PowerPoint Add-Ins' then 'Go...', then click 'Add New', select the .ppam file in the default Add-In folder or in the folder where you downloaded it, then 'Close' - Create and set a temporary file folder:
IguanaTex needs access to a folder with read/write permissions to store temporary files.- The default is 'C:Temp'. If you have write permissions under 'C:', create the folder 'C:Temp'. You're all set.
- If you cannot create this folder, choose/create a folder with write permission at any other location. In the IguanaTex tab, choose 'Main Settings' and put the path to the folder of your choice. You can also use a relative path under the presentation's folder (e.g., '.' for the presentation folder itself).
- (Optional, for pdflatex/xelatex/lualatex support) Install and set path to GhostScript and ImageMagick:
To use the PDF to PNG conversion (i.e., with pdflatex, xelatex and lualatex) instead of the default DVI to PNG one, you need to install GhostScript (gs9.26 is the currently recommended version, as issues with 9.27 have been reported) and ImageMagick and set the appropriate full paths to gswin32c.exe/gswin64c.exe (note the 'c'!) and convert.exe in the 'Main Settings' window. When installing ImageMagick, make sure to check the box to 'Install development headers and libraries for C and C++' and (in recent versions) to 'Install legacy utilities (e.g. convert)'. Download links are provided in the Main Settings window. - (Optional, for vector graphics support) Install and set path to TeX2img:
To use vector graphics output, you need to install TeX2img (here is the direct download link for recommended version 2.1.0). After unpacking TeX2img somewhere on your machine, please run TeX2img.exe once to set the various paths to latex/ghostscript, then set the full path to TeX2imgc.exe (note the 'c'!) in the 'Main Settings' window.
Latex Plugin For Powerpoint Free
Note 1: When upgrading to v1.34 or later, you may notice that some displays (typically larger ones) created with versions up to v1.33 change size when editing them. This is a once-per-display necessary inconvenience to handle an inconsistency in how PowerPoint inserts images.
Note 2: v1.50 fixes a rescaling issue occurring when using computers with various DPI settings. The caveat is that this results in a one time resizing inconsistency for displays created on monitors with DPI other than 96. (I tried very hard to make this backward compatible, but came to the conclusion that it was not reasonably possible.)

If you modify the code, you will need to save it as a new .ppam add-in file, remove the current version of the add-in and add yours instead.

More details regarding malware detections: As can be seen on virustotal.com's analysis, a binary component containing macros I wrote (or included after checking they were safe) is being flagged as suspicious.
